What Is the Qdenga Dengue Vaccine?
Qdenga is a live attenuated dengue vaccine developed using the dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) as its genetic backbone. DENV-2 is considered one of the most common dengue strains circulating in Thailand. Once administered, the vaccine stimulates the body’s immune system to build protection against dengue infection.
How Many Doses of Qdenga Are Required?
The Qdenga dengue vaccine requires a total of 2 doses. The vaccine is administered subcutaneously in the upper arm, with the second dose given 3 months after the first dose (Month 0 and Month 3).
Benefits of the Qdenga Dengue Vaccine
- Provides protection against all four dengue virus serotypes: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4, with an efficacy rate of up to 80.2%
- Reduces the risk of hospitalization by up to 90.4%
- Helps reduce disease severity by 85.9%
- No blood test or dengue antibody screening is required before vaccination
- Suitable for individuals aged 4–60 years
Can be administered to both people who have had dengue fever before and those who have never been infected
When Should You Receive Qdenga After Recovering from Dengue Fever?
A second dengue infection may lead to more severe symptoms and complications. Therefore, vaccination is recommended even for those who have previously had dengue fever. Individuals should wait at least 6 months after recovery before receiving the Qdenga vaccine.
Possible Side Effects of the Qdenga Dengue Vaccine
Most side effects are mild, usually occurring within 2 days after vaccination and resolving on their own within 3–4 days. Common side effects may include:
- Pain, swelling, redness, or warmth at the injection site
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle aches and body pain
Who Should Avoid or Delay Qdenga Vaccination?
The Qdenga dengue vaccine may not be suitable for certain individuals, including:
- People with weakened immune systems, such as:
- Patients taking immunosuppressive medications
- Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy
- Individuals living with HIV
- Patients receiving high-dose steroid treatment, such as Prednisone 20 mg/day or 2 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks within 4 weeks prior to vaccination
- Individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions to vaccine components
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Women of childbearing age should avoid pregnancy for at least 1 month after vaccination
- Individuals with hypersensitivity to active ingredients, excipients, or previous dengue vaccines
Summary
Dengue fever remains a major health concern, especially in tropical countries. Vaccination with Qdenga is an effective way to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. Combined with mosquito control and personal protection measures, dengue vaccination can help safeguard your health and the well-being of your loved ones.
