- Stye
A stye or hordeolum (Bintitan) is an inflammation of the oil glands on the eyelid. It usually appears as a red, painful bump, similar to a small pimple. Proper care can relieve symptoms and prevent complications.
Causes
Styes are often caused by bacterial infection, most commonly Staphylococcus aureus. Risk factors include:
- Touching the eyes with unclean hands
- Wearing contact lenses
- Using unclean or poorly removed eye makeup
- Previous history of styes
- Weakened immune system
- Chronic eyelid inflammation
Home Care:
Most styes heal on their own. Recommended self-care includes:
- Apply a warm compress to the eyelid for 5–10 minutes, 3–5 times daily
- Wash hands and face frequently
- Avoid touching or rubbing the affected eyelid
- Do not squeeze or try to drain the stye yourself
“If the stye does not improve, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics or perform a minor drainage procedure to safely remove pus and treat the infection.“
